Keynote Speaker:
Gwen Carlton, DNP, FNP-BC, AE-C
Dr. Carlton is a Family Nurse Practitioner who practices at Covenant Allergy and Asthma in Chattanooga, TN. Her entire professional career has been focused on the education and treatment of patients with asthma and allergies. The realization of the need to reach many more patients than she could see personally in her clinic motivated her to educate other health care professionals how to better care for their patients with asthma and allergies. In 1990, Gwen received the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Secretary’s Award for Innovations in Health, Certificate of Merit 1990. This award was for her project in middle Tennessee to increase knowledge in relation to asthma in five target groups. These groups included patients with asthma, their families, school teachers, the community at large, and allied health professionals. Her passion to help patients with asthma get the best care possible has kept her motivated and energized to continue spreading the word about appropriate asthma care. While in graduate school at Vanderbilt University, she worked as the Program Director for the American Lung Association of Tennessee where she developed the statewide asthma camp program and also worked other lung disease programs. In the recent past, she worked as National Program Director of the Asthma Care Network, a program that delivered asthma education to health care professionals at the point of care in primary care physician offices. This program proved to be very successful in getting primary care physicians and their staff to determine level of control of their patients and thereby more appropriately treat their patients. An article was published in 2005 in the Journal of Asthma describing the impact of this project. In 2008, she graduated from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center with a Doctorate in Nursing Practice. Her research focused on the perception of child with asthma and their perception of asthma control and their parent’s perception of asthma control using the Childhood Asthma Control Test.
